The level of library business in country is determined first of all by its information significance. The creation of unified library information net became a very important problem not only with the purposes of economy of financial and technical means, but also by necessity of information exchange.
The administrative staff of the centralised library systems and urban libraries has come to a conclusion about necessity of co-ordination and co-operation of their activity, as a result there was the creation of the project of a corporate network of Moscow libraries. The Moscow Business Library (MBL) is determined by the solution of Committee on culture of government of Moscow by the participant of designing and first-order implementation of a Corporate network of public libraries (Corporate network of public libraries of Moscow) as its Base centre of the provider.
The overall objectives and problems MBL in the given project are connected to improvement of the quality of informational - library service of the inhabitants of region, district and city at the expense of activity on formation of integrated information resource shareware of public libraries of Moscow, implementation of ways and means of their usage on the basis of modern library-information know-how and telecommunication environment pursuant to the solutions of the preliminary design Corporate network of public libraries of Moscow .
The given Project targets more full satisfaction of social, cultural, educational and other needs of all groups of the population, not only maintained MBL, but also other locales of Russia. The activities executed in the Project, are further development of activity MBL and are stipulated “Program a modernisation of public libraries of Moscow ”, approved by its mayor - Y.M. Luzhkov in August, 1998.
Realising the long-term Project, we talk about a so-called corporate network of public libraries, and here we should understand, what is necessary first of all for any megalopolis. The given network is a unified complex of organisational, technological, technical and information means intended for creation and usage of integrated information resources of public libraries with the purpose of satisfaction of social, cultural, scientific and other kinds of requirements of users.
The relevant technological areas of activity of the given system are:
1. Maintenance of information and linguistic compatibility of the electronic catalogues and databases of libraries for implementation of valuable access to library resources, integrated within the framework of separate cities and countries,
2. Decrease charges of cataloguing, which in conditions of independent technologies are rather significant and have the steady tendencies of growth.
The reasons of creation of the given system can also be and that fact, that now libraries can not and should not limit only by library forms of service. Specially it concerns those libraries, which have the Internet connection. To the new forms of service can concern granting to the users various factographical information. This concerns to the items of information about administrative, cultural, medical entities and educational institutions, carrier, different kind measures spent in territory of Moscow, services to the population etc.
The given project considers also prospects of development of the system at the expense of appeal in the following stages of those libraries, which were not concluded to the system in the given stage. Besides, it is planning to connect other internal and foreign corporate systems, separate libraries, information services and users.
